What is Passive House?
Passive House (Passivhaus) is a standard of construction which results in a home (or any building type) possessing a high level of comfort, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. All at an affordable price.
Passive House offers a high level of comfort, which means that interior air temperatures are comfortable regardless of extreme outdoor temperatures. The use of highly insulated walls, roofs and floors along with quality windows and doors all contribute to this comfort by keeping warmth in during the winter and heat out in summer.
Homes built to the Passive House standard are radically energy efficient and can see energy savings in the heating and cooling of up to 90% less than a house of standard construction. Passive solar heating, along with internal heat sources such as appliances and heat recovery can make a furnace or other heating appliances unnecessary. Passive cooling and shading help to keep the house cool during the summer months.
A high level of air quality is achieved through the use of a high quality, energy efficient ventilation system. This is combined with a heat recovery system so that the warmth contained in old, stale exhaust air may be used to condition the fresh incoming air.
